About Michael Boniface

Helping teams advance information systems for the benefit of society is at the heart of my career. I enjoy finding new ways to improve health, well-being, productivity, and learning using data-driven and networked systems. I’ve been privileged to live my career working with inspirational people across disciplines and sectors, and as a result gained deep experience in data and distributed systems, digital innovation and software engineering.

As Director of the IT Innovation Centre, I lead teams advancing AI/data science, cyber security, and future infrastructures as applied to data-driven decision support for enhanced health and social care, security risk assessment and compliance for complex cyber-physical networks, and intelligent service delivery in future networks.

My current focus combines health and federated data systems with projects tackling machine learning to predict risk of exacerbation of diseases and patient deterioration on emergency care pathways, along with pathway redesign resulting from virtual interactions (eg remote oximetry and consultation) and self-management digital health apps.

I lead the Social Data Foundation for Health and Social Care Transformation engaging citizens and care providers to accelerate research and innovation through linked data in ways that are secure, rights respecting and endorsed by communities. I also support digital transformation strategy for Hampshire and IoW Integrated Care System and NHS Trusts.

You may wonder where I’m anchored? I enjoy being part of teams addressing important societal challenges by building on expertise as an innovator and engineer with extensive knowledge of data science, data engineering and service-oriented systems working across the entire technology stack.

Working in teams to create shared vision and stakeholder commitment to novel propositions is exciting. In the end it’s always about the multidisciplinary working with domain experts, engineers and policy makers who together can establish strategy, technical road maps and delivery plans. Mentoring, supporting and contributing as needed to hands-on development in design and implementation of solutions, APIs and resolving issues in experience, logic, data and performance is a critical factor to grow and support the careers of others.
