About Joseph Lillegard

Joseph Lillegard is Chief Scientific Officer of Castle Creek Biosciences, Inc. He led a cell and gene therapy research lab at Mayo Clinic with a focus on correction strategies of inborn errors of metabolism of the liver. Based on this research, Dr. Lillegard co-founded Cytotheryx, Inc., a hepatocyte cell-based therapy company, and Novavita Thera, Inc., a cell and gene therapy company, and served as Chief Scientific Officer and President of both companies.

Dr. Lillegard is a board-certified pediatric and adult general, thoracic and fetal surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Minnesota where he leads the Open Fetal Surgery Program and serves as Director of Research at the Midwest Fetal Care Center. He earned an M.D. and Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Nevada and completed his residency at Mayo Clinic in General Surgery and a Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Lillegard is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Pediatric Surgeons, American Society for Gene and Cell Therapy, European Society for Gene and Cell Therapy, International Maternal Fetal Surgery Society and the North American Fetal Therapies Network.
